Skills assessments are an integral part of Australia’s immigration system, particularly for individuals who wish to migrate to Australia through skilled migration programs. Major Skill Assessing Authorities:

To get your skills assessed, you have to apply for skill assessment to an authority
in Australia relevant to your occupation. Some of the major skill assessment authorities are as follows: –

Health Insurance

The Australian healthcare system consists of public health and private health. It is essential for every temporary visa holder like visitor, worker, or student, to have comprehensive health insurance while they are in Australia. Department of Home affairs assure applicants to procure health insurance for the period of stay.

There are 2 types of Health Cover in Australia:

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC):

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is health insurance for international students that helps to cover medical costs in Australia. It is a condition of your student visa that you maintain OSHC for the duration of your studies. The students' guardians must also acquire the plan if they intend to accompany them.

Overseas Visitor Health Cover (OVHC):

Overseas Visitor Health Cover (OVHC) is health insurance for international visitors visiting or working in Australia on a temporary visa. If you become sick or have an accident while you are here in Australia, OVHC will help you pay for your medical costs.

Professional Year

PY is a well-structured program that provides aspiring learners with sufficient practical training and introduces them to a future career path. A Professional Year is authorised by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection and several other accrediting bodies. It allows students to develop industry-specific skills through study and work experience, preparing them for professional careers in the Australian workforce.

The program has a duration of 44 weeks, which includes a 12-week internship placement. Across 32 weeks, courses cover Business Communication skills and Australian Workplace skills. Following this, participants will complete a 12-week Australian workplace internship. There are three main disciplines offering Professional Year programs. These are Accounting, Engineering, and Information Technology.

Eligibility

To qualify for a Professional Year Program, one MUST

  • Have graduated from a related higher education program (Bachelor or Master) within Australia (minimum 2 years duration)
  • Currently hold or applied for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485, either stream) with at least 12 months validity
Provide evidence of English language proficiency (Minimum 6 each band in IELTS or equivalent)

STREAMS

Accounting PROFESSIONAL YEAR PROGRAM

Accounting professional year program is available to all students who have completed at least two years Bachelor or Master Accounting Degree in Australia. Those who graduate with Australian accounting degrees can complete Accounting PY Program and obtain a skills assessment that can be used to apply for GSM.

IT PROFESSIONAL YEAR PROGRAM

IT professional year program is available to all students who have completed at least two years Bachelor or Master IT Degree in Australia. This program is endorsed and developed by the Australian Computer Society (ACS). Those who graduate with Australian IT degrees can complete PY Program and obtain a skills assessment that can be used to apply for GSM.

ENGINEERING PROFESSIONAL YEAR PROGRAM

Engineering professional year program is available to all students who have completed at least two years Bachelor or Master Engineering Degree in Australia This program develops and enhance the skill of recent engineering graduate.
